I feel horrible that I haven’t been able to post in a while, but I just started my new job on Monday and it’s been an adjustment. I am pooped when I get home! I spend a couple of hours with the kids before they go to bed and then try to cram some homework in before I go to bed. Last night was the season premier of LOST so I had to watch that! Anyone that follows me on Twitter knows that. I should be doing some homework right now, but I really just want to kick back and “veg” tonight.
I was so excited about tomorrow being shopping night at Bagshot Row Bamboo, but then I remembered that I have to be at a funeral home around the same time that Joyce will be stocking and probably when she opens it up for shopping. Anyone that shops there knows there won’t be much, if anything, left by the time I get home. I’m bummed. I don’t want to have to wait until next Thursday to get my new stash of diapers. That’s horrible to say since the reason I will be missing out is because of a viewing for an old friends dad. But hey.. cloth diapering is addictive, right?
I am super excited about going shopping this Saturday! My sister is coming over to watch the kids so my husband and I can leave the house kid-free. We’re going to the Apple store to get my new MacBook Pro – which, of course, I’m totally geeked about! My poor PowerBook G4 laptop is in desperate need of being replaced.
I sold two baby items on Craigs List yesterday – my Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump and our Graco Element Pack n’ Play in Mulberry. I’ve decided that I’m not going to pump while at work this time. Elizabeth eats a lot of solids now and was only “snacking” during the day anyway. She does the majority of her nursing in the morning, evening, and during the night. So it works out perfectly.

Being a breastfeeding mom, I know how important it is to make sure you’ve got protection for your clothing – especially in the first few months of breastfeeding. I used Lansinoh disposable nursing pads for the first three months at least – even at home! I was always protected as long as I had these ultra thin, super absorbent pads in place. They are now new and improved and even softer than when I was using them! I have a 36 count box of individually wrapped New & Improved Disposable Nursing Pads up for grabs!

To enter: Just leave me a comment. It’s that simple! You can tell me something about your breastfeeding experience or if you’re pregnant and have never nursed before, tell me something you’re concerned about… I am a Medela Mom Maven and would be glad to answer any questions or concerns you might have. Or just tell me what you’re looking forward to!

Elizabeth had her first “meal” today. I nursed her at lunch, then gave her some sweet potatoes and she loved them! No horrible face like with the applesauce attempt. Gabby’s first favorite was sweet potatoes too. So, at just shy of 9 months old, Elizabeth is officially starting solids. Obviously, breast milk will remain primary for many months to come, but she will be able to enjoy some yummy veggies and fruits now too.
She had her checkup today too. She weighs 15 lbs 9 ounces and is 27 1/4 inches long.

Elizabeth is eight months, 9 days old today and this evening is the first time I attempted to give her solids. She is EBF so technically she doesn’t need any solids until 1 year of age. I was going to wait until Thanksgiving dinner, but she kept reaching for my dinner so I got out a little bit of unsweetened apple sauce and gave her a bite. She did not like it at all! She made the funniest face. I wish I had taken a picture. She was perfectly happy to wash that taste away by nursing for a few minutes. I guess we’ll try something different on Thanksgiving. Nana is going to make her a sweet potato – cooked and mashed – so we shall see how she responds to that.

Being a breastfeeding mom I have read all about different supplements to increase milk supply – from Fenugreek alone to a mixture of different herbs served in liquid or pill form, such as More Milk Plus. I was looking around to see what the prices are on things like this because my cycle returned earlier this month and I’ve heard that milk supply can take a dip during that time of the month. I first looked at Motherlove.com because that is the brand name of the MMP drops. Well, let me tell you it was expensive just for the 2 ounce bottle! So I proceeded to look around and came across Lucky Vitamin. I was happy to see that their prices are a great deal more competitive. I ordered a 2 ounce bottle of More Milk Special Plus to try out. I’ll post a review of how well it works after I’ve tried it. =) If you’re looking for supplements for an increase in milk supply or simply for vitamins, Lucky is the way to go.

Don’t miss out on two very important work shops at Babies R Us. The first is breastfeeding 101 sponsored by Medela. It’s on Tuesday, October 20th at 6:30 pm. The second is Buckle Up & Boogie car seat work shop sponsored by Britax. So many people do not take car seat safety seriously enough. If you think you might need to learn a thing or two, or you know someone that does, please make it a point to get to Babies R Us on Tuesday, October 27th at 6:30 pm.

I’ve been invited to become a Medela Mom Maven! What is that, you ask? A breastfeeding ambassador to share knowledge about the many benefits of breastfeeding, as well as breastfeeding advice, with other moms and moms-to-be. How exciting!

Did you know that, not only does breast milk feed your baby the most nutritious and perfect food, but it’s also healing?
Instead of spending $5.00 on Little Noses Saline spray, use breast milk to clear out your baby’s stuffy nose. It works great and it’s free!
It also aids the healing process of Conjuctivitis or “pink eye,” ear infections, scrapes, cuts and even sore nipples. We all know that your nipples go through hell when start breastfeeding. Instead of spending money on lanolin ointment, try using your own breast milk to heal your cracked/sore nipples. Now I’m not saying that if your child has an ear infection or “pink eye” that you shouldn’t go to the doctor, but breast milk will speed up the healing process and it’s something you can start to use before you make it to the doctor.
Does Breast Milk Really Heal?
Many doctors, researchers, and scientist agree that breast milk does appear to have healing properties that can prove beneficial when it comes to treating minor illnesses and injuries. This is because of the antibodies that breast milk contains. Just as breast milk provides your baby with necessary antibodies to fight off infection, it can also work to kill off bacteria and viruses when applied topically to problem areas.
Is Breast Milk Safe To Use?
You may be a little put off about using your breast milk to help cure your or your children’s illnesses. Rest assured however, breast milk is extremely clean and sterile for use. Just make sure that you store your breast milk correctly, as you would for feedings.
It is important to keep in mind that breast milk may not be 100% effective in ending infections or illnesses. For this reason, keep a close watch on infections and be sure to seek appropriate medical treatment if the infection does not resolve itself promptly. Never rely on breast milk as a cure for serious illness or disease.

I can’t believe I forgot to post the very best breastfeeding site there is on the internet! Kellymom has everything you could ever want or need to know about breastfeeding. Think your milk supply is low? Go to Kellymom to find out if you’re right and what you can do about it. Wondering if there’s a specific way to bottle feed your breastfed baby? The answers are there at Kellymom. Want to know what kind of medication is safe during breastfeeding? Head on over to Kellymom.
And since I’m on the topic of medications – and I’m currently sick with some horrid sinus/upper respiratory infection and a nursing mom – let me just bring something to your attention. VERY IMPORTANT: Even though a medication may be “safe” to use while breastfeeding you have to keep something in mind – if you take something to dry you up (runny nose, etc) it is very possible that it will dry up your milk supply too. In most cases it is better to use a sinus rinse kit or Netty Pot instead of messing with your milk supply. And yes.. continue to breastfeed even if you’re sick. It helps pass along the antibodies to your baby to help him/her fight the infection.
